Accessible Virtual Therapy for Washington State Residents
The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) reports that just under 1.63 million Washington State residents struggle with a mental health condition such as anxiety and depression. This number is more than 7-times the population of the city of Tacoma. Of particular concern, is that almost 390,000 of Washington adults have a serious mental illness, and that nearly 17% of WA’s adolescents aged between 12-17 experience a major depressive episode each year. The stage is set for a more troubling future when considering that 3.3 million Washington residents (more than the entire populations of 20 U.S. states) live in a community that does not have enough mental health professionals. What’s the reason for the lack of resources? The Seattle Times suggests that it’s the result of systemic workforce shortage, low insurance reimbursement for behavioral health, geographic disparities, state underfunding, a slow licensing process, a lack of training pathways, and administrative burdens. This combination of factors leads to poor access, especially in rural areas, with a critical need for qualified clinicians that is exacerbated by high demand. This is where Kindbridge Behavioral Health comes in. We have opened our virtual doors to the “Evergreen State”, with counselors on standby right now to provide help to those in need.
Using Technology to Overcome Tech Addictions
A new threat to public health has infiltrated Washington State over the last decade. Problematic behavior regarding engagement with web-enabled activities has compromised the wellbeing of vulnerable residents. These issues include the following:
- Problematic online gambling behavior: Recent data finds that problematic gambling behavior is evident in 2% to 4% of adults and in 8% to 9% of adolescents and young adults in Washington State.
- Problematic use of pornography: Statistics show that Washington State ranks 11th among all 50 U.S. states in online porn consumption, per capita, with an estimated 432,000 adults in WA indicating that they are unable to watch porn responsibly.
- Problematic online trading behavior: National studies suggest that 8% of investors meet the criteria for compulsivity regarding online trading.
- Unhealthy video gaming: National studies suggest around 3-5% of gamers experience issues with unhealthy gaming.
- Problematic online shopping behavior: National studies suggest that up to 16% of Americans struggle with unhealthy online shopping behavior. Of note, is that a recent survey found that 11.8% of Washington residents felt “highly addicted” to Amazon, suggesting a significant regional concern for compulsive shopping.
As a virtual counseling platform, Kindbridge leverages technology to treat all of the above. Counseling specific to each issue are available to any WA resident with a smartphone, tablet, or laptop (everyone). Click or call to connect right now.
