Mental Health in Ohio at a Glance
Data from the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) for Ohio indicates that nearly 2 million adults in the state – over 16% of the population – have a diagnosed mental health condition. In addition, more than 43% of adults report having symptoms of anxiety and depression. Sadly, Ohio’s youth are on a similar track. The Behavioral Health Barometer for the state reports that almost 17% of those aged 12-17 have experienced a Major Depressive Episode (MDE). More concerning, is that nearly 54% of the 12–17 Ohioan age group with depression did not receive any care in the most recently reported year. Both socioeconomic and geographic limitations are partly to blame. NAMI reports that an estimated 20% of all Ohio residents (2.4 million people) live in a community that does not have adequate access to mental health professionals.
Renewed Focus on Problem Gambling in Ohio
The numbers above show that access to behavioral health services in the state is very limited. Access to specialized therapy for disorders such as problem gambling, is even more limited. And it’s not for a lack of need.
Every 5-years the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services conducts a survey about problem gambling in the state. In 2017, nearly 1 million adult residents in Ohio were designated as being at-risk, with almost 1% identified as problem gamblers. Furthermore, at-risk gambling doubled from 2012 to 2017. Results of the next 5-year survey (closed 12/3122) will be released later in 2023. The number of at-risk residents is expected to be even higher. Why? As of January 1 (2023) Ohio was added to the US States with Legal Sports Betting Map.
Online sports betting is now fully legal in Ohio. This will forever change the landscape of problem gambling in the Buckeye State.
