Accessible Virtual Therapy for Idaho Residents
The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) reports that more than 400,000 Idaho residents struggle with a mental health condition such as anxiety and depression. This number is more than 3-times the population of the ID city of Meridian. Of added concern, is that about 95,000 Idaho adults have a serious mental illness, and that nearly 17% of ID adolescents between the ages of 12-17 experience a major depressive episode each year. Without intervention, the state is headed for an especially troubling future when considering that 1.2 million Idaho residents live in a community that does not have enough mental health professionals. That’s a startling 60% of the entire population.
What’s the reason for the lack of adequate mental health support? Idaho Business for Eduction reports that it’s due to several intertwined factors. These include a lack of investment in training programs, inadequate funding, poor retention rates, and geographic disparities, leaving the entirety of Idaho classified as a Mental Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA). For the uninitiated, an HPSA is a U.S. region, population group, or facility designated by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) as having a severe lack of mental health providers, which includes a shortage of behavioral health specialists. In response, Kindbridge Behavioral Health has stepped in. We have opened our virtual doors to the “Gem State”, with specialized counselors on standby to receive new clients.
Using Technology to Overcome Tech Addictions
A new threat to public health has infiltrated Idaho over the last decade. Problematic behavior regarding engagement with web-enabled activities has compromised the wellbeing of vulnerable residents. These issues include the following:
- Problematic online gambling behavior: National studies suggest that up to 7% of adults meet the criteria for problematic gambling behavior, which equates 82,000 Idahoans. Unfortunately, recent reports state that Idaho ranks last among all U.S. regions in regard to state-funded problem gambling service investment.
- Problematic use of pornography: As with problem gambling (above) National studies suggest that up to 7% of adults meet the criteria for problematic gambling behavior, which equates 82,000 Idahoans.
- Problematic online trading behavior: National studies suggest that 8% of investors meet the criteria for compulsivity regarding online trading.
- Unhealthy video gaming: Idaho’s population surpassed approximately 2 million residents as of early 2026. Based on general population studies, the prevalence of unhealthy video gaming (or Internet Gaming Disorder, IGD) in the United States is estimated to affect between 1.7% and 10% of the population. Other studies cite a range of 0.3% to 3.05%. Applying these percentages to Idaho’s population suggests a potential range of affected individuals, with a low-end estimate of approximately 6,000 residents, a mid-range estimate of approximately 61,000 residents, and a high-end estimate of approximately 200,000 residents .
- Problematic online shopping behavior: While there isn’t state-specific data for Idaho, the general prevalence rates can be applied to the state’s population to provide a rough estimate. With Idaho’s 2026 population at around 2 million, it’s estimated that 160,000 Idaho adults may be affected, assuming the state mirrors national averages.
As a virtual counseling platform, Kindbridge leverages technology to treat all of the above. Counseling specific to each issue are available to any Idaho resident with a smartphone, tablet, or laptop (everyone). Click or call to connect right now.
