Accessible Virtual Therapy for Hawaii Residents

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) reports that about 132,000 Hawaii residents struggle with a mental health condition, including chronic stress and anxiety. This number is five-times greater than the population of the state’s fourth most populated city, Hilo, on the Big Island, although most issues are centered around Honolulu, Oahu. Of added concern, is that about 62,000 Hawaii adults have a serious mental illness, and that nearly 17% of the archipelago’s youth between the ages of 12-17 experience a major depressive episode each year. Current surveys from the University of Hawaii indicate that 31% of statewide respondents report symptoms of depression, with 4% reporting severe depressive symptoms. Depression rates are highest among young adults in the 18–34 age range.

Without intervention, the state is headed for an especially challenging future because half-a-million (about 35%) of Hawaii residents live in a community that does not have enough mental health professionals. Rural regions on the Big Island, Maui, Kauai, and Molokai, along with the west side of Oahu (Waianai and Makaha) are most notably removed from access. To overcome barriers to accessing qualified support, Kindbridge has stepped in to offer powerful virtual therapy. Hawaii residents (individuals, couples, and families) can connect to a specialized counselor right here, right now.

Using Technology to Overcome Tech Addictions

Technology addiction is one of the fastest growing threats to public health in The Aloha State. Problematic behavior regarding engagement with internet-enabled activities has compromised the wellbeing of vulnerable and at-risk residents. These issues include the following:

  • Problematic online gambling behavior: Research shows Hawaii ranks 1st among all 50 U.S. states for gambling related arrests, and that 24,000 adults in the state struggle with problem gambling. This is despite a statewide ban on casino gaming and sports betting.
  • Problematic use of pornography: Research finds that Hawaii ranks 4th in the entire United States for subscriptions to online pornography and ranks 6th for most porn viewership per capita.
  • Problematic online trading behavior: National studies suggest that 8% of investors meet the criteria for compulsivity regarding online trading.
  • Unhealthy video gaming: National studies suggest around 3-5% of gamers experience issues with unhealthy gaming.
  • Problematic online shopping behavior: Hawaii leads the U.S. in online spending per capita, with residents spending around $24,425 annually online (as of 2025 data). This is largely due to island isolation and reliance on imports and so there is nothing innately concerning about the data. That being said, national studies suggest that up to 16% of Americans struggle with unhealthy online shopping behavior. It’s estimated that 231,360 Hawaii residents may be affected, assuming the state mirrors national averages.

As a virtual counseling platform, Kindbridge leverages technology to treat all of the above. Counseling specific to each issue are available to any Hawaii resident with a smartphone, tablet, or laptop (everyone). Click or call to connect right now.
