Resources for Families Struggling with Gambling Addiction

When a Spouse Has a Gambling Problem

Is it your spouse (or coparent) who is struggling with casino gaming and/or sports betting? Given that 65% of marriages where one partner has a gambling problem end in divorce, it’s important to take action today for the sake of your union and children. The guides below will walk you through how to help your spouse:

When a Parent Has a Gambling Problem

Are you the child of a home that has been broken by gambling addiction? While it may feel like it, you’re not alone. If you’re from a two-parent household please share your concern with the parent who is not struggling with gambling addiction, and then share this online resource with them. They can take action from there, together with help from Kindbridge’s family counseling services.

If you’re under 18 and from a single parent household (the parent struggling with gambling addiction) reach out to an older sibling, aunt/uncle, grandparent, or extended family member that you trust and tell them what’s going on. Share this information resource with them when you do, as they can stage an intervention by following the tips provided below:

When a Child Has a Gambling Problem

Years ago, the heading above would seem unthinkable to many households. And while teenagers have been gambling for as long as adults have been gambling, it has become a problem of larger proportions ever since the proliferation of online gaming and the legalization of sports betting in the majority of U.S. states. Recent research shows that 60-80% of high school students have already gambled for money. In some cases they gamble amongst themselves, but they are also able to subvert age restrictions on online sports betting sites/apps by using older sibling’s and parent’s IDs and payment cards. They are also able to use unregulated sports betting and casino operator sites which don’t have anywhere near the checks and balances of regulated operators.

Kindbridge has covered the youth gambling problem quite extensively and has created a number of insightful articles to help parents respond to (and prevent) problematic gambling behavior among their children. However, given the serious nature of youth problem gambling we do encourage parents to call right away to schedule a family counseling session. After doing so you can then reference the materials below the contact number.
